I've never forgotten you and I never will.

LaDona Harrell Martin

When I was in eighth grade and about to enter high school, my class was visited by members of the high school chorus. They encouraged us to add chorus to the list of classes we would take, and since I loved music and had been very active in band, I did. That's how I met Mrs. Martin (or "Martin," as she preferred to be called).

"Martin" (a former child star on the radio and P.E. teacher, as well as a wonderful chorus teacher and musician) changed my life forever. Why? – Because she not only taught me to sing as part of the chorus and various vocal ensembles, but also helped me build loads of confidence in myself and in my creative abilities during those always-stressful years of post-adolescence. In a very short period of time, I came to view her as much more than a teacher: she became a continuing inspiration, role model, and mother figure for me. I admired her so much, in fact, that I decided to become a choral music teacher myself—and it doesn't matter that that didn't work out for me (How could it? I was trying to become her, which was of course impossible) because my high regard for her has lasted to this day.

The photo you see here is the most recent one I have of "Martin." Though the photo was taken at least 20 years after she was my teacher, it still shows something of her perky, energetic nature, I think. It will, sadly, also be the last photo I have of this beloved teacher: she passed away in mid-July of this year.

Dear Dennis,

First of all let me thank you ever so much for the motivating words you´ve been posting in my blogger and posterous blogs. I´d like you to know that those words made me more confident and gave me some more energy to move on and continue daring. Well, as for your music teacher, Martin, I´m positive there must be many former students who feel the same way about you. You are such a dedicated, supportive and motivating peer that I dare to say you must have been even better as a teacher. You have no idea how glad I am to have had the chance to meet you online. Hope I have the opportunity to learn even more with you.
Best wishes, Lucíola

Dear Lucíola,

What a pleasure it is to see your comments here. I'm particularly happy to see that you put them under my post about Martin.

Re what I've said in your blogs, you're 100% welcome—and when I say that, I'm speaking totally do coração. It's very touching and gratifying to learn that I have, in some small way, given you more confidence and helped you find the energy to "move on and continue daring." I'm deeply honored.

Yes, Martin touched the lives of many, many students—not just me, and not just in my school. She was loved and respected by many because she took a personal interest in each of her students and was a boundless source of encouragement and empowerment for all of us who knew her and worked with her. She's no longer with us physically, but her influence continues, and all of us who were fortunate enough to know her will never forget her and what she so generously gave us.

I was sometimes a good teacher and sometimes less than good, but my students were always important to me, and I was always willing to help if I could. I'm still in touch with some of my students, by the way. I'm currently helping one student whom I first met more than 15 years ago, as a matter of fact, and I also recently re-established contact with two others via FaceBook. One of these former students dates back to more than 15 years ago, and the other was in one of my classes about three years ago.

I'm also glad I've met you online, Lucíola, and I hope we'll continue to keep in touch and learn together.

Abraços!

Dennis
